Case Study: Implementing an Active UAV Defense System for Natural Gas Facility Protection

Introduction
Natural gas infrastructure, classified as Grade-1 national security and anti-terror protection assets, faces growing threats from unauthorized drones. These “rogue UAVs” pose risks of espionage, safety breaches, and operational disruption. To address this, we present a case study on deploying an integrated detection and countermeasure drone defense system designed specifically for high-risk energy installations.

The Challenge: Protecting Critical Energy Assets
Oil and gas facilities—including extraction sites, refineries, and distribution centers—are increasingly targeted by unauthorized drones. These intrusions threaten data theft, sabotage, and potential safety incidents. Compliance with stringent national standards, such as China’s GA1551-2019 regulations for the petroleum and chemical industries, further requires specialized solutions that balance effectiveness with safety and reliability.

The Solution: Integrated Detection and Neutralization System
Our project implemented an active drone defense framework centered on the UADS-ZG12 “Detect-and-Strike” integrated system, supported by the UAD-P01SS timing protection device. This system creates a secure low-altitude zone around sensitive facilities through real-time monitoring and proactive countermeasures.

Key System Features & Capabilities

  1. Autonomous 24/7 Operation
The system runs continuously without manual intervention, ensuring round-the-clock airspace monitoring and instant response to UAV intrusions.

  2. Low-Power, Safe Jamming Technology
With a signal transmission power ≤10mW, the system effectively disrupts unauthorized drone navigation and control signals while minimizing interference with surrounding communications and meeting regulatory emission limits.

  3. Compliance with GA1551-2019 Standards
The solution adheres to China’s mandatory anti-terror security requirements for petroleum, chemical, and natural gas sectors, including:

    • Autonomous 24-hour operation

    • Low-power signal emission

    • Possession of nationally recognized explosion-proof certification

  4. Dual-Function Design: Detection & Countermeasures
The UADS-ZG12 system identifies, tracks, and neutralizes threatening drones through GNSS/radio frequency deception, disrupting their navigation and forcing safe retreat or landing.

  5. Explosion-Proof Certification
Certified for use in hazardous environments, the system ensures safe deployment in gas-rich operational areas.

Implementation Overview

  • Primary Device: UADS-ZG12 Detect-and-Strike System × 1

  • Supporting Device: UAD-P01SS Timing Protection Device × 1

  • Deployment Scope: Perimeter and critical point defense around natural gas processing and storage sites.

Why This System Is Ideal for Oil & Gas Facilities

  • Regulatory Alignment: Fully satisfies GA1551-2019 requirements for oil, petrochemical, and natural gas operators.

  • Proactive Security: Moves beyond passive monitoring to actively prevent drone threats.

  • Minimal Operational Impact: Works silently and continuously without disrupting facility operations.

  • Future-Ready Design: Adaptable to evolving drone technologies and threat patterns.

Conclusion
For natural gas and petrochemical enterprises, protecting low-altitude airspace is no longer optional—it’s a regulatory and operational imperative. The UADS-ZG12-based active defense system offers a compliant, reliable, and intelligent solution to counter drone threats, ensuring physical and informational security while maintaining continuity in critical energy operations.
